Performance of sulfonated poly aryl ether benzimidazole copolymer membrane for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell

Abstract: Sodium 3,3 - disulfonate-4,4 - dichlorodiphenylsulfone (sdcdps) and 5,5 - bis [2 - (4-hydroxyphenyl) benzimidazole] (hpbi) monomers were synthesized. Sulfonated poly aryl ether benzimidazole copolymers were synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic polycondensation. The structures of monomers and copolymers were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). A proton exchange membrane was prepared by dissolving the copolymer in dimethylacetamide (DMAC) and casting it on a glass plate. The copolymer membrane is doped with sulfuric acid to ensure proton exchange performance. The single cell performance of copolymer membrane was tested on a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell test-bed. highest power density of the membrane was measured as 23.7 mW cm−2 at 80°C. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that as the degree of disulfonation is increased thermal stability of the copolymer is increased.
