Steel fiber: an effective way to prevent the damage of FRP plate bonded concrete

Abstract: Although the efficiency of steel fiber in improving the mechanical properties (crack resistance and failure toughness) of concrete is widely discussed in the literature, there are limited studies on the effect of fiber on the structural properties of externally bonded structures. The effect of steel fiber on the failure characteristics of concrete members strengthened with external carbon fiber reinforced polymer plate is studied. Members bear different load conditions. The test data of four tie rods and eight beams are given. Different materials are used for internal reinforcement: in addition to traditional reinforcement, high-grade steel and glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforcement are also considered. Experimenteral results indicated that the fibres, by significantly increasing the cracking resistance, alter the failure character from splitting of the concrete to the bond loss of the external sheets and thus noticeably increase the load bearing capacity of the elements.
