Manufacturing cement-based plastering with phase change materials: application and feasibility

Abstract: This paper focuses on evaluating the rheological and mechanical properties of Cement-Based Plaster made of phase change material (PCM) in the form of microencapsulated paraffin for innovative and environmental friendly residential buildings. Specifically, cement-based plastering is made by adding different amounts of paraffin microcapsules, and the weight percentage of paraffin microcapsules relative to adhesive is between 5 and 20 . Evaluate the specific mass, entrainment or entrainment of air, and setting time on fresh mortar. The compressive strength was measured over time to evaluate the effect of PCM additives on cement hydration kinetics. Drying shrinkage was also evaluated. The experimental results show that the compressive strength decreases with the increase of PCM content. In addition, the higher the pricePCM content, the higher the drying shrinkage. The results confirm the possibility of manufacturing cement-based renders containing up to 20 by weight of PCM microcapsules with respect to binder.
