Meshless prediction of chloride diffusion in concrete structures

Abstract: Reinforcement corrosion caused by chloride ion penetration is a serious problem in civil engineering. At present, the numerical simulation method is mainly the finite element method based on mesh generation. In this study, element free Galerkin method (EFG) and element free weighted least square method (MWLS) are used to simulate the diffusion of chloride ions in concrete. The range of scaling parameters is given by using a numerical example based on meshless method. The effectiveness and accuracy of the two meshless methods are verified by one-dimensional and two-dimensional numerical examples. The results of MWLS are compared with those of EFG, FEM and analytical method. Good consistency was obtainedg MWLS and EFG numerical simulations and the experimental data obtained from an existing marine concrete structure. These results indicate that MWLS and EFG are reliable meshless methods that can be used for the prediction of chloride ingress in concrete structures.
