Experimental study on compressive strength and stress-strain equation of undisturbed soil and improved soil in Loess Plateau

Abstract: Loess plateau soil is a special soil widely distributed in Northwest China. Its structural properties are poor and it is difficult to plant crops. According to the local arid climate, the best use of soil is as a native building material, which has been used for thousands of years. In order to study and improve its mechanical properties, this study investigated the response of soil with cement, lime, sand and rice straw as admixtures to compressive load. The effects of different content on the compressive strength and ductility of concrete are compared and analyzed. The test data are also used to develop dimensionless and generalized models to describe the total stress-strain response of original soil and improved soil. The model can be applied to soil and soilfied soil in Loess Plateau with variable strength and deformation characteristics and therefore may be exploited for earthen construction design and nonlinear structural analyses.
