Abstract: The existence of residual stress in steel members will significantly reduce the stiffness and fatigue life of steel members. For the wide butt weld in the construction of large steel members, the influence becomes more serious because the residual stress distribution is different from the normal size butt weld. In this paper, the residual stress of wide butt weld is studied by an 8 test program. High residual stress is produced during wide butt welding, which is even higher than the yield strength of steel. In addition, with the increase of the distance from the butt weld, the residual stress in the steel plate is first compressive stress, and then transformed into tensile stress. Size of resiual stress increased with the increase in the width of the welding seams. This paper also developed a finite element model by SYSWELD to simulate the residual stress produced by the wide butt welding. The accuracy of the FE simulation was checked by the reported test results. In order to reduce the residual stress, the ultrasonic peening method was adopted. The analysis results indicated that ultrasonic peening method effectively reduced the residual stress caused by the wide butt welding during the construction.
