Temperature characteristics of porous Portland cement concrete in hot summer

Abstract: In hot summer, the road surface heats the near surface air, which affects the thermal comfort of human body. Because porous Portland cement concrete (PPCC) has a large number of connected porosity, its thermal parameters are very different from traditional Portland cement concrete (PCC). The temperature variation characteristics of PPCC and its impact on the surrounding environment are also different. In hot summer, 48 hour temperature records of one PCC and five PPCC with different porosity were continuously recorded outdoors. The air temperature at different heights above the concrete specimen is measured by using a self-made closed box, and the characteristics of near surface air temperature are analyzed. The output heat flux of different concrete specimens is calculated. Th results show that the PPCC has higher temperature in the daytime and lower temperature in the nighttime and larger temperature gradient than the PCC. The air temperature above PPCC is lower than that of PCC after solar radiation going to zero at night. The total output heat flux of PPCC is slightly smaller in the daytime and significantly smaller at night than that of PCC. The results of tests and calculations indicate that PPCC contributes to the mitigation of heating effect of pavement on the near-surface air.
