Multiaxial cyclic deformation and low cycle fatigue behavior of low carbon steel and related welding metals

Abstract: Low cycle fatigue tests of low carbon Q235B steel and its related welding metal samples were carried out under uniaxial, in-phase and 90 ° out of phase loading conditions. Significant additional cyclic hardening was observed in the base metal and its associated weldments under 90 ° out of phase loading. In addition, the welding process produces additional hardening under the same load conditions compared to the base metal. The multiaxial low cycle fatigue strength of base metal and weld metal specimens under 90 ° out of phase loading decreased significantly. Under the given load condition, the fatigue life of the weldment is lower than that of the base metal, and the reduction degree of the fatigue life of the weldment increases with the increase of the strain amplitude. KBM, FS and MKB critical plane parameters are evaluated for the fatigue data obtained. The FS and MKBM parameters are found to show better correlation with fatigue lives for both base-metal and welded-metal specimens.
