SPR characteristic curve and residual stress distribution of self piercing riveted joint of steel plate

Abstract: The residual stress distribution in self piercing riveted (SPR) joints is described by neutron diffraction. The plate shows compressive residual stress near the joint, and the stress gradually becomes tensile stress in the plate far from the joint. The stress of rivet leg in thick joint of softer steel plate is lower than that in thin joint of harder steel plate. This lower amplitude is attributed to the lower force gradient in the rivet flaring stage of SPR process curve. In this study, the characteristic curve is used to illustrate the relationship between the residual stress results and the physical phenomena occurring in the connection process. The results also show that the neutron diffraction technique can detect the crack at the rivet tip, which is nt apparent from a cross-section.
