Abstract: Damage variables are of great significance for studying the damage evolution of materials. Taking frozen loess as an example, at 5.0 × A series of triaxial compression and triaxial loading and unloading tests were carried out at a strain rate of 10 − 6 – 1.3 × 10 − the temperature is 2 s − 6 ° C. The damage criterion of frozen loess is defined, and the damage factor is introduced to meet the requirements of engineering application. The damage variables of frozen loess are studied by stiffness degradation method, deformation increment method, dissipated energy increment method and constitutive model derivation method of deformation process. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of these four methods in freezing loess materials are also discussed. According to the discussion, the plastic strain may be the most appropriate variable to characterize the damage evolution of frozen loess during the deformation process based on the material properties and the nature of the material service.
