Emission reduction performance of modified hot mix asphalt mixture

Abstract: In this paper, three new asphalt modifiers with pollutant emission reduction effect and new emission measurement equipment compatible with several existing asphalt production systems are developed. Through a comprehensive experimental design, the effects of various modifiers, asphalt binder types and hot mix asphalt (HMA) grades on pollutant emissions were evaluated in the laboratory. In addition, the road performance is monitored to evaluate the emission reduction of the modified HMA mixture used for production. With the increase of modifier content, the emission reduction performance is significantly improved, and the maximum emission reduction is 70.5 . However, for the dosage greater than 20 of the initial asphalt weight, the effect of modifier content on the reduction of pollutant emission is often not significant. Zhangs in asphalt type and asphalt mix gradation are found to moderately impact the emissions reduction effect. Finally, the mechanisms of emissions reduction are investigated, primarily attribute to their physical and chemical adsorption and pollutant reductive degradation characteristics.
