Study on seismic performance of ancient wooden structures in Tibet

Abstract: Tibetan ancient wooden structures have important historical, cultural, artistic and scientific values. According to the field investigation results, the structural forms of wall, roof, floor and semi-rigid connected wood skeleton are studied in this paper. The seismic characteristics of ancient wooden structures in Tibet are summarized and introduced. A unique feature of Tibetan ancient wood structure is that its special beam column joints are semi-rigid. The numerical simulation of a typical three-story structural element of Potala Palace is carried out. The acceleration response of the structure under the action of El Centro seismic wave is studied. The results show that the arrangement of nodes is helpful to improve the seismic performance of the structure. Most Tibean ancient timber structures are suffering from different types of damage to certain extent which is vulnerable to seismic actions. Typical damage problems of the structural components are summarized and the main causes of this damage are analyzed. Different rehabilitation methods that can be implemented are discussed, providing references for maintenance of the structures.
