Abstract: The determination of asphalt pavement segregation is a controversial issue between institutions and contractors. The visual inspection method is usually used to determine the pavement texture and to verify the field core density test. In addition, laser based devices such as Florida texture meter (FTM) and circular orbit meter (CTM) have been recently developed to evaluate the texture of asphalt mixture. In this study, an innovative digital image processing method is used to determine pavement segregation. In this process, the standard deviation of the gray image frequency histogram is used to determine the isolation area. Then, the standard deviation obtained from image processing is classified by linear discriminant analysis (LDA)into the segregated and nonsegregated areas. The visual inspection method is utilized to verify this method. The results have demonstrated that this new method is a robust tool to determine segregated areas in newly paved FC9.5 pavement types.
