Influence of water content on red layer performance of Guangzhou Metro

Abstract: In order to reveal the influence of water content on the shear strength, expansion and creep characteristics of red bed in Guangzhou Metro, the typical red bed geotechnical specimens were studied by direct shear test, UU triaxial test, expansion test and creep test, and the measured data were analyzed. The results show that the internal friction angle decreases exponentially with the increase of water content, and the cohesion first increases and then decreases with the increase of water content, which conforms to Gaussian function. The expansion rate decreases significantly with the increase of initial water content. Red sandstone has strong isotropic expansion and disintegration characteristics. The mechanism of the influence of water on the physical properties of red bed is waternduced microstructures and mineral compositions change which caused the macro physical and mechanical characteristics degradation. The results should provide the reference for further research for water induced damage mechanism or creep damage control of red-layers in engineering practice.
