Geological feasibility of underground oil storage in Jintan Salt Mine

Abstract: In the next few years, China will build a number of large underground oil storage spaces in deep salt mines. According to the geological survey, China s first salt cave oil storage base is planned to be built in Jintan salt mine. In this study, the geological feasibility of salt mine oil storage is determined in detail as follows. The regional structure, stratigraphic sedimentation and distribution characteristics of aquifers in Jintan Salt Mine are evaluated and analyzed. The tightness of the caprock is evaluated through macro geological and micro measurement. According to the geological characteristics of Jintan salt mine, the specific target layer for the construction of underground oil storage is selected, and the non salt interlayer is blockedwas evaluated. Based on the sonar measuring results of the salt caverns, the characteristics of solution mining salt caverns were analyzed. In addition, the preferred way of underground oil storage construction was determined. Finally, the results of closed well observation in solution mining salt caverns were assessed. The research results indicated that Jintan salt mine has the basic geological conditions for building large-scale underground oil storage.
