Effect of saturated coral aggregate and shrinkage reducing agent on self shrinkage of ultra-high performance concrete

Abstract: Saturated coral aggregate (SCA), as a practical substitute for quartz sand, has been proved to effectively alleviate the self shrinkage in ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The development of self deformation, compressive strength, flexural strength and hydration properties of cement paste under different shrinkage modes were tested. Three different methods were evaluated to reduce autogenous shrinkage: SCA, shrinkage reducer (SRA), and sca-sra mixture (sra-sca). The results show that both SCA and SRA can effectively reduce the shrinkage deformation, and sra-sca is the most effective to reduce the shrinkage deformation. When the dosage of SCA was 44 , SRA was 0.8 and SCA content was 0.5 , the self shrinkage of UHPC was inhibited6 , the SRA dosage was 2.4 , the SCA content was 18 , the SRA content was 2.4 , or the SCA dosage was 26 . The mechanical properties were deteriorated by the addition of SCA, while the compressive strength was still higher than 90 MPa at 28 days even though the replacement ratio of SCA was up to 50 . Furthermore, internal curing by means of SCA was proved to be a successful way to mitigate autogenous shrinkage, after the tests.
