Abstract: Calcined clay is type Q supplementary cementitious material according to en197-1:2000. Its thermal conductivity is lower than that of cement. In order to further improve its thermal insulation performance, polymer calcined clay complexes (PCCS) were synthesized by one pot method. Two contrast polymers, polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), were used. The hydrophilicity of the polymer affects the thermal conductivity of PCC. Hydrophilic peg intercepts more water molecules on the clay layer than hydrophobic PS, making peg-pcc more thermally conductive than ps-pcc. Pollutants in calcined clay play a role in affecting the overall thermal conductivity. PCC can improve the thermal insulation performance of future building applications.
