Design and analysis of 3D mixed color printing nozzle for melt deposition

Abstract: Melt deposition molding (FDM) is one of the most widely used rapid prototyping (RP) technologies, which has attracted the attention of the market. Obviously, 3D objects need to be printed; However, due to the entry-level nozzle structure, the existing FDM printers are limited to printing monochrome objects, and there is little literature on this subject. Firstly, the CAD model of the nozzle is established by using UG (Unigraphics NX) software, and the structure of the nozzle of 3D color mixing printer is displayed. Secondly, the nozzle channel model is extracted and simplified. Then, CAD and finite element models are established by UG and ICEM CFD software respectively to prepare for simulation. The flow field is numerically simulated by FLUENT software The nozzle’s suitable temperature at different extrusion speeds is obtained, and the reason for the blockage at the intersection of the heating block is revealed. Finally, test verification of the nozzle is performed, which can produce mixed-color artifacts stably.
