Development and characterization of albite based cementitious material in ilmenite waste stream

Abstract: Norite is a main solid waste produced in the production of ilmenite. This study mainly studies the availability of norite as a solid precursor of alkali activated cement. Sensitivity analysis was carried out to find out the effects of different alkali types and raw material particle size on polycondensation. Norite was ground and mixed with sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide solutions to prepare binder. In terms of strength development, potassium containing system is more effective than sodium containing system. X-ray diffraction patterns show that zeolite, albite and oligofeldspar are formed according to the type of activator and additives used. The pattern also shows the formation of amorphous phase in the adhesive matrix cured at 8 ℃°C. Microstructure analysis revealed some degree of crystallization with different Si : Al ratios, which indicated heterogeneity of the binder matrices.
