Abstract: Structural damage can be detected by the frequency response function (FRF) of impact and corresponding response measurements. Using FRF data extracted from a very limited frequency range, it is rarely possible to estimate the mechanical property changes of dynamic systems for damage detection. The intrinsic orthogonal mode (POM) extracted from the frequency response function and its modified form in a given frequency range can be used as the damage index of damage detection. POM based damage detection methods must be sensitive to the selected FRF. This work compares the effectiveness of POM damage detection methods estimated by FRFs in five different frequency ranges (including resonance frequency and anti resonance frequency). Numerical examples show that the extraction of POM is feasiblerom the FRFs within antiresonance frequency ranges provide more explicit information on the damage locations than the ones within resonance frequency ranges.
