Comparative study on strength and corrosion resistance of plain cement concrete and mixed cement concrete

Abstract: The mechanical properties, permeability and corrosion resistance of different types of concrete are compared. The concrete type is made of ordinary portland cement (OPC), pozzolanic Portland cement (PPC) and slag Portland cement (PSC). Compressive strength test, effective porosity test, water absorption coefficient, short-term accelerated applied voltage test and rapid chloride ion penetration test (RCPT) were carried out on M30 and M40 concrete designed with OPC, PPC and PSC cement for concrete types cured at 28 and 90 days. Long term studies such as micro cell and electrochemical evaluation were carried out to understand the corrosion behavior of reinforcement embedded in different concrete types. PSC concrete has better corrosion resistanceete by showing a minimum current flow, lowest free chloride contents, and lesser porosity. Besides, PSC concrete has shown less coefficient of water absorption, chloride diffusion coefficient (CDC), and lower corrosion rate and thereby the time taken for initiation of crack extended.
