Numerical analysis of impact load of bonded joints

Abstract: Because the repeatability of impact strength results of bonded joints is very small, especially the results carried out on different testing machines, the author was inspired to carry out experimental and numerical research in this field. Block shear test was used in the investigation. The authors compared the impact strength of samples loaded in standard and non-standard ways, and the dependence of the distance between the edge of the impactor and the surface of the bonded joint on the impact strength. The numerical calculation is carried out in the ANSYS program, using the explicit dynamics module. A method of simulating pendulum impactor is proposed. It was found that the direction of the sample cake loaded and rotated changede in relation to the edge of the impactor results in a significant change in the Max Principal Stresses. Numerical investigations show that lower values of Max Principal Stresses occur in joints which are characterized by larger impact strength, determined experimentally. It was also noted that moving away the edge of the impactor from the surface of the adhesive joint increases normal stresses perpendicular to the surface of the joint.
