Synthesis and characterization of porous fly ash based geopolymer with silicon as foaming agent

Abstract: In this paper, foamed geopolymers were synthesized by using fly ash and metal silicon as binder and pore forming agent respectively. The effects of some important synthetic parameters, such as silicon foaming agent content ( w W fly ash), alkali type (R: Na or K) and alkalinity of activation solution (R Al molar ratio) on the compressive strength and apparent density of foamed geopolymer were studied by Taguchi method. The final product was characterized by XRD, FTIR and SEM, and optical microscope was used to evaluate the porosity. Light geopolymer with compressive strength of 2.08 – 14.88   Μ PA, apparent density 0.84 – 1.55   g cm3 was prepared by introducing Si with silicon content up to 0.2 w W into fly ash bass.
