Parameter optimization design of percussion drilling system to improve efficiency

Abstract: This paper aims to determine the optimal design parameters of percussive drilling system considering bit rock interaction. Firstly, the motion dynamics of falling piston impact bit is simulated by impact stress propagation and rock crushing mechanism (representing penetration resistance coefficient and unloading constant). Secondly, considering the impact duration and rock loading unloading conditions, the damping vibration behavior of drill bit is studied. In addition, the proposed dynamics is simplified by using two dimensionless parameters representing bit piston mass ratio and rock piston stiffness ratio. Finally, according to the proposed parameters, the drilling efficiency defined by the energy transmitted from the piston to the rock is given. purposeof optimal design parameters for percussive drilling systems improved the drilling efficiency. These results are applicable to the design and performance estimation of down-the-hole and top-hammer systems.
