Study on Thermomechanical properties of dodecaboride particle reinforced aluminum zinc matrix composites

Abstract: The effect of adding particles in gravity casting Al Zn alloy on high temperature composite deformation of the alloy was studied. The selected characterization techniques are thermomechanical analysis (TMA), Brinell hardness (HB) and optical microscope. After homogenization treatment, Al-5 wt. Zn and Al-10 wt. Zn containing 0, 2.08 and 4.16 wt. B samples were quenched in ice water and tested with thermomechanical analyzer at different temperatures. It was found that after TMA treatment, as expected, the Brinell hardness of the composites increased with the increase of zinc and particle concentration. However, at higher temperature levels, this increment is not uniform for all samples, indicating that there is a non-equilibrium interaction between reinforcing particles and zinc. This is further cooperationroborated by TMA experiments, which revealed that for samples with Al-10 wt. Zn, high temperature deformation augmented as more particles were present. After high temperature treatment, precipitation of zinc-rich allotriomorphs was observed by the optical microscopy performed on the samples near or on the aluminum grain boundaries, which discarded the potential effect of fine precipitation due to aging.
