Mechanical properties of lightweight foam concrete

Abstract: Foam concrete has excellent physical properties such as light weight, high strength, good heat insulation and sound insulation. It allows to minimize aggregate consumption and contributes to the principle of waste utilization by replacing some cement with fly ash. For many years, the application of foam concrete is limited to retaining wall backfill, foundation insulation and roof tile insulation. In the past few years, however, foam concrete has become a promising structural material. A series of tests were carried out to check the mechanical properties of foam concrete mixtures without fly ash and fly ash. In addition, the effect of 25 freeze-thaw cycles on the compressive strength of concrete was also studiedength was investigated. The apparent density of hardened foamed concrete is strongly correlated with the foam content in the mix. An increase of the density of foamed concrete results in a decrease of flexural strength. For the same densities, the compressive strength obtained for mixes containing fly ash is approximately 20 lower in comparison to the specimens without fly ash. Specimens subjected to 25 freeze-thaw cycles show approximately 15 lower compressive strengths compared to the untreated specimens.
