Analysis and optimization of preparation parameters of waste rubber diatomite modified sustainable asphalt binder

Abstract: In this study, rubber powder and diatomite were used to modify asphalt binder. The wet method was used as the preparation method. Firstly, the corresponding preparation process was determined. The effects of six preparation parameters (rubber powder concentration, diatomite concentration, shear time, shear speed, shear temperature and storage time) on the properties of modified asphalt binder (penetration, softening point, ductility at 25 ° C, viscosity, elastic recovery and penetration index at 135 ° C) were studied. Multi response optimization was carried out by response surface method. The results showed that with the increase of rubber powder concentration, the softening point, viscosity, elastic recovery and permeability index of rubber increased, while the permeability and ductility decreased. Softening points, viscosity, and penetration index increase, while penetration and ductility decrease with the increase of diatomite concentration, which presents little influence on elastic recovery of binder. Shear temperature presented significant effects on penetration, softening point, viscosity, and ductility. Shear speed, shear time, and storing time have similar effects on binder properties because of their similar mechanism of action. Based on the model obtained from the response surface method, optimized preparation parameters corresponding to specific criteria can be determined, which possess favorable accuracy compared with experimental results.
