Forming mechanism of spline teeth by high speed cold rolling

Abstract: ASTM 1045 spline teeth were prepared by high speed cold rolling beating (hscrb) process at room temperature. The microhardness of spline teeth was measured by Nano Indenter. The grain and orientation angle distribution were measured by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The results show that the microhardness of the composite is increased to 1280   m deep from the ratchet surface. The microhardness and grain size decrease gradually in the direction away from the surface. On the surface, the content of ultrafine grains increased by about 90 , and the average grain diameter (about ∼ 0.56   µ m) decreased by 71.4 . A model of grain evolution in hscrb process is proposed in this paper. New grains first appear on the boundary of slender grains in numerou subgrains. The elongated grains are refined as a result of subgrain rotation. By analyzing the HSCRB technical principle, we concluded that the process parameters affect the refinement degree of studied steel by determining beating pass, beating pass interval time, and strain rate.
