Abstract: Due to the existence of radioisotopes (40K and uranium and thorium decay group isotopes), geological materials are potential sources of external gamma radiation in buildings. The contents of these radioisotopes can be evaluated through laboratory analysis. Laboratory analysis requires the extraction of samples, has relevant capital and time constraints, and it is difficult to evaluate the materials already used in the existing structure. In this work, the results of portable gamma spectrum analysis are compared with laboratory analysis in radioisotope estimation, and the radioactivity concentration index (to evaluate the joint contribution of different radioisotopes to external gamma radiation) is calculated based on them. The research object is rock and its "in-situ " weathering products. resultained indicate that despite several problems posed by field measurements with portable gamma spectrometry, namely, in terms of the geometric characteristics of the objects measured, this technique has the potential to identify materials with different hazard levels related to external gamma radiation.
