Mechanical properties of carbon fibers recovered by steam thermal decomposition: statistical method

Abstract: The latest development of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) recycling technology leads to the need to evaluate the mechanical response of recycled carbon fibers. Since these fibers may degrade during recycling, it is very important to determine their tensile residual properties to evaluate their ability as new composite reinforcements. Carbon fibers were regenerated by steam heat treatment to degrade the epoxy matrix of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP). Two conditions were selected to achieve two degradation efficiency levels of steam thermal decomposition. Select several carbon fiber samples for mechanical test, or single fiber tensile test on monofilament, or cluster tensile test on fiber bundles. It is shown that the single fibre tensile test leads to a wide variability of statistical parameters derived from the analysis. Bundle tensile tests results were able to indicate that fibre strength of recycled carbon fibre is similar to corresponding as-received carbon fibres thanks to a statistically relevant database. Wide number of tested filaments enabled indeed to obtain low scatters.
