Feasibility of nano-SiO2 particles improving the properties of recycled aggregate concrete

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to study the feasibility of using nano SiO2 (nano silica) to improve the performance of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) containing recycled aggregate (RA), which comes from the treatment of construction and demolition waste of concrete buildings. The tested properties include compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and water absorption. The study also included examining the microstructure of RA and Rac, including whether they contain SiO2 nanoparticles. A total of nine mixtures were investigated. Two mixtures with RA contents of 50 and 100 were studied, and for each RA content; Three mixtures were prepared with three different nanoparticle doses of 0.4 , 0.8 and 1.2 (based on the mass of cement). A control mixture containing natural aggregate (NA) was also prepared for comparisoneasons. The results show that nanoparticles of silica can improve the compressive strength, tensile strength, reduce the water absorption, and modify the microstructure of RAC.
