Simplified model of elastoplastic contact of granular geotechnical materials

Abstract: We propose a simple elastoplastic contact model, which is used for discrete element method (DEM) simulation of geotechnical materials by considering the interaction of two spheres in the normal direction. The model is established in the form of power law relationship between dimensionless normal force and displacement by using finite element method and nonlinear fitting method. Each load unload contact process between two spheres requires only four parameters, which are related to the material properties evaluated by FEM simulation. Within a given range of material properties, these four parameters can be quickly accessed by inserting additional data or providing regression functions. Different from von Mises (V-M) yield criterion, Drucker Bragg (D-P) criterion is applicable to the United Statesd to describe the yield behavior of contacting spheres in this model. The D-P criterion takes the effects of confining pressure, the intermediate principal stress, and strain rate into consideration; thus, this model can be used for DEM simulation of geomaterials as well as other granular materials with pressure sensitivity.
