Evaluation of dynamic micro chamber as a rapid control method for formaldehyde emission from industrial particleboard factory

Abstract: The most common formaldehyde control method for wood-based panel in Europe is the perforation method, which is used to measure the formaldehyde content, while most legal requirements in the world are based on emissions. The chamber method usually used for emission measurement takes too much time to reach the stable state of factory quality control. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the emission values of particleboard measured one day after production can be used for quality control purposes. The correlation between 1-day and 7-day emission values was determined using dynamic micro chamber (DMC). Three industrial board types with different densities and emission levels were used in the evaluation. The on-line emission measurement equipment aviation laser al4021 is connected to a 1 m3 chamberwas used to gain further information on the emission reduction behaviour of the different board types. Only the two particleboard types with higher densities showed good correlation between the 1-day and 7-day emissions. The overall results suggested that 1-day emission values can be used for factory quality control purposes; however, if the initial 1-day values are above the permitted level, extensive evaluation for each individual board type needs to be performed.
