Potential response of Ag / AgCl chloride sensor in model alkaline medium

Abstract: The stability and reproducibility of Ag AgCl sensors in alkaline medium are very important for the application of these sensors in cement-based materials. The response of the sensor or its open circuit potential (OCP) reflects the dynamic balance of the sensor environment interface. The OCP response in alkaline medium is affected by hydroxide ions. The interference of hydroxide ions leads to inaccurate or delayed response of the sensor to specific chloride content. In this paper, the potential response (or OCP evolution) of chloride sensor is measured in model solution, similar to concrete pore water. The scattering of OCP sensor under the interference of hydroxide ions with different chloride ion concentrations is discusseddium. The deviation of the sensor’s response from its ideal performance (determined by the Nernst law) is attributed to dechlorination of the AgCl layer and the formation of Ag2O on the sensor’s surface. Results from the surface XPS analysis of the AgCl layer before and after treatment in alkaline medium confirm these observations in view of chemical transformation of AgCl to Ag2O.
