Abstract: A new method for predicting the long-term thermal brittleness of steel caused by phosphorus segregation is verified. The method is based on the results of impact strength or fracture toughness tests on specimens annealed after relatively short-term neutron irradiation. 2Cr – Ni – Mo – V steel for WWER-1000 reactor pressure vessel was studied under four conditions: initial condition, thermal aging, neutron irradiation and post irradiation annealing. The results of impact strength, tensile test and SEM are given. The brittle fracture characteristics of different materials are considered. The effect of neutron irradiation on phosphorus diffusion in steel was calculated and estimated. The experimental data are reported, which confirms the strong diffusion of P acceleration under neutron irradiation.
