Microstructure, mineral composition and mechanical properties of red beds in southern China

Abstract: In order to reveal the water-induced damage mechanism and mechanical properties of southern red beds, typical red bed samples were experimentally studied by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy spectrum analysis, XRD and mechanical test. The results show that some red bed samples contain a large number of clay minerals of montmorillonite and illite montmorillonite mixed layer, and their microstructure is mainly accumulated micro aggregates formed by the mutual condensation of flaky and flaky clay particles. Micropores and cracks widely distributed in micro aggregates provide necessary water migration channels. Various cementitious materials produce an irreversible structural strength, which is very fragile under the condition of aqueous medium. Influxnce of microstructures and mineral compositions on red-layer mechanical properties is discussed. The results could provide the reference for further research about the water-induced damage mechanism of red-layers in Southern China.
