CT study on microstructure evolution of gravelly soil under triaxial compression

Abstract: Gravelly soil is widely used in many engineering construction projects, partly because of its wide distribution and rich natural reserves. The micromechanical behavior of gravelly soil under triaxial compression was studied by computer tomography (CT) real-time test with special loading equipment. Through the quantitative analysis of CT quantity and CT image, the evolution of soil particle mesostructure, such as particle motion law and long axis direction, and its relationship with macro phenomena were studied. The results show that with the increase of axial strain, the average CT number decreases, but the standard deviation increases, indicating that the internal structural defects of gravelly soil intensify during loading. Poseyion adjustment and long axis evolution of particles reflect behaviors of particle rearrangement and anisotropism development during the triaxial compressive process. Experimental findings are helpful to revealing the mesomechanism of deformation of gravelly soil.
