Impact toughness and hardness of sisal fiber epoxy resin composites

Abstract: The effects of mercerization (alkali treatment), silane treatment and final acid hydrolysis on sisal fiber were studied. The effects of treated fibers on the impact toughness and hardness of epoxy resin composites were studied. Scanning electron microscopy of the treated and untreated fiber surfaces showed that the chemical treatment process enhanced the removal of surface impurities, thus increasing the roughness of the fiber surface. This helps to increase the surface area interlocked with the matrix, so it is expected to enhance the adhesion between them. The treated fiber reinforced composites have high impact toughnessess and hardness than the untreated fibre reinforced composites. These higher values were attributed to better interfacial bonding due to better mechanical interlocking between the treated fibres and epoxy resin arising from the increased roughness of the treated fibres.
