Mechanical properties of polyethylene carbon nanotube composites polymerized in situ over metallocene catalysts

Abstract: The effect of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the properties of polyethylene prepared by in-situ polymerization of metallocene catalyst (Cp2ZrCl2) and methylaluminoxane was studied. Multi walled carbon nanotubes were introduced into polymer matrix by stirring method. The addition of MWCNT resulted in the decrease of molecular weight, the increase of branch chain number and the increase of crystallinity. It was also observed that the addition of MWCNT during metallocene catalyzed polymerization decreased the dynamic modulus and Young s modulus of polyethylene. However, the decrease of tensile strength is the smallest, and the elongation at break increases with the increase of breaking energy.
