Simulation of particle behavior during shot peening

Abstract: In this paper, the numerical model of particle behavior in shot peening process is established, and the interaction between particles and treated materials and particles is considered. In addition, the acceleration effect of compressed air on particles is also considered. Through the detailed analysis of compressed air flow, the force acting on shot peened particles is calculated. The model is implemented on a multi-body dynamics simulator, and the particle behavior in the shot peening process is analyzed. The numerical results show that the velocity distribution of shot peened particles before collision is caused by the interaction between shot peened particles flying from the nozzle to the sample. In addition, the distribution of impact position on the sample surface is consistent with the experimental resultslts. Therefore, the developed model is simulated the particle behaviours during shot peening. The particle velocities and the location of impingement obtained by the proposed approach are useful for the initial condition of the following collision analyses.
