Abstract: Human infants seem to develop to acquirecommon phonemes to adults without the capabilityto articulate or any explicit knowledge. To understand such unrevealed humancognitive development, building a robotwhich reproduces such a developmental processseems effective. It will also contribute toa design principle for a robot that can communicatewith human beings. This paper hypothesizesthat the caregiver’s parrotry to thecoo of the robot plays an important role in thephoneme acquisition process based on the implicationfrom behavioral studies, and proposea constructive model for it. We validate theproposed model by examining whether a realrobot can acquire Japanese vowels through interactionswith its caregiver.
