Women in Labour Market: An Analysis of Indian Electronics Manufacturing Industry

Abstract: Electronic manufacturing sector is one of the advanced sectors and employ a significant number of women. The government of India is currently focusing on development of manufacturing sector under Make in India scheme with electronics as a main concern sector. In this context, the present paper attempt to understand the employment profile of the workers employing in this sector. There are few studies which are primarily based upon the case studies and other type of methods. Indian academia lacks research in this particular sector. Till now, there are hardly any attempt has been made to highlight the importance of this area with the help of Government of India data source. Thus, National Sample Survey 68th round (2011-12) data has been extensively used for the analysis in the present paper. The results reveal that there is still a huge gap exists between female and male work participation, status of employment and earnings in electronics manufacturing sector. Women are still employed at lower level jobs and getting lower wages, social security benefits and have lower union presence than their male counterparts.
