The Future of Digital Pedagogy – An Indian Perspective

Abstract: The rapid advancements in Technology have triggered the explosion of volume of the digital users beyond the boundaries of the nations, which is also facilitating the student community to acquire skills through various forms of digital content. The present trends in digital learning in various parts of the world is explored. On the other hand the changes in the psychology of students and teachers are analyzed. Moreover, the limitations of digital learning are also identified.With the introduction of Outcome Based Education format into Indian education system,the entire focus has been shifted from teacher specific teaching to learner centric teaching. In this process several processes including digital methods are being tested at various institutions. In this context a study has been made on a sample of Engineering students, about the effectiveness of different methods like digital connectivity with students, online video contents, online evaluation system, peer learning. Also data is collected on the awareness, usage, usefulness and the expectations of the student community on the digital support. The results are analyzed. The student community feels the importance of digital pedagogy. However; they feel it is not a complete replacement of a teacher. They also feel that instead of lengthy lecture videos, short and crisp animated explanations will be more student friendly. They also expressed concern over the imbalance in the quality, quantity and availability of digital content. Finally, possible ways and steps to be taken up to inherit and evolve digital Pedagogy as an augmented learning mechanism that suits the requirements in the Indian Environment is proposed.
