Abstract: Flyback converters are widely used in low and medium power applications for their simplicity, low component count, electrical isolation, and ease of control. However, these converters mainly suffer from very high voltage spike when the active switch is turned off. This voltage spike is produced by the leakage energy of flyback transformer. Additionally, this leakage energy greatly reduces converter efficiency. This paper presents an overview of different flyback converter topologies with leakage energy recovery utilization mechanism. The general principle of operation of the flyback converters with energy recovery utilization mechanism is summarized. Relative merits and demerits of these converter topologies are given. This work benefits the power supply designers in selecting an appropriate flyback PWM DC- DC converter with better efficiency and reduced voltage stress for a certain application.
