Abstract: We investigate the potential effect of gender and cultural background in shaping individual behavior when agents are required to accomplish a task. Our results, which derive from a natural experiment, reveal that a combination of different social norms (linked to various types of cultural backgrounds) is fundamental to creating the peer pressure that helps to ensure that a group task is accomplished properly.
