Abstract: Among the opium producing countries, India is one of the major producer of illegal opium in which includes the demand in nationwide and global peddling of opium. Opium is derived from the dried latex of the opium poppy and it is also called as the Papaver Somniferum. It can be taken intravenously injected, smoked, and in the forms of pills. The derivatives of opium are morphine, Thebaine, codeine, noscapine, Papervine. It is used for the medicinal purposes also. The symptoms of the opium are nausea, slowed breathing, constipation, confusion, dry mouth and lining of nose, anxiety, depression, vomiting, insomnia, itching etc. Due to the overdose of the opium, the person can go in coma and death may also occur. Opium affects the many internal organs like brain, respiratory system, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, immune system, liver. In this review article, aims about the detailed study of the narcotic drug and the toxic effects caused by the humans.
