West Med Short Sea Shipping: From Point to Point to Multi-Call Services

Abstract: The present study aims at analysing the current structure of intra-Mediterranean Short Sea Shipping services and the possible convenience of implementing vertical relations in order to increase the attractiveness of some full freight maritime routes. Recently, several changes has happened in the region with relevant impact on the national economies that have affected also the maritime trade routes and their organisation (e.g. the implementation of the Motorways of the Sea, the economic growth of the North African countries, new trade patterns), making the Mediterranean region an interesting environment to develop innovative Short Sea Shipping policies. The present paper focuses on the European West Mediterranean ports in order to highlight the characteristics of the Short Sea services linking them with the North Africa shore. The article is organised as follows: Section 1 briefly introduce the characteristic of the area, while Section 2 describes the organisation of the existing service supply. Section 3 underlines main feature on the current trade flows and Section 4 is dedicated to explore some possible market evolutions. Section 5 addresses the conclusion and discusses some further extensions of the current research.
