Abstract: The following article investigates the impact of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s aviation industry. Although the Iranian government has used the aviation industry orders for new modern aircraft to showcase the economic benefits of such agreement, the reality is that actual improvements were very modest. I show that political ambitions did not translate into sustainable economic results. The initial optimism caused a modest increase in demand for air travel to and within Iran, and Iranian airlines modestly expanded their services. International airlines were more successful than their Iranian counterparts to expand their services to Iran. This improved the performance of the commercial aviation sector in Iran. However, it seems that focusing on the role of sanctions causes Iranian authorities to ignore the impact of macroeconomic variables and the competitiveness of Iran’s commercial industry.
