Abstract: With the rapid depletion in natural resources and also due to various other environmental issues that has caught the attention of a wide global Audience, a need to recycle and reuse materials has been seen as the call of the hour with regard to sustainable design and architecture. One such material or rather commodity that can be reused and re-purposed is shipping containers. Thousands of Shipping Containers are left to be idle at container yards after the completion of their service which on average would be about 7-8 years. These idle shipping containers can then be repurposed and with appropriate modifications be made habitable. Shipping Containers can be used to make houses, office spaces and even restaurants. Apart from being trendy, construction of enclosures using shipping containers can prove to be advantageous with regard to cost, period of construction, salvage value etc to name a few. Another conundrum being faced the world over is the shortage of housing. In Urban India alone there is a requirement of about 20 million housing units owing to the high population of the nation. Shipping containers can be one of the solutions to address this burning issue. These containers can be converted into homes at a very fast rate and can also be completed at a cost nearly half of that of a conventional RCC house. In view to solve this problem and a few others, this project was taken up where a 2 Bedroom House was built using shipping containers.
