Causes of Failure of Flexible Pavement (a Case Study of Awka-Ugwuoba Section of the Old Enugu-Onitsha Expressway)

Abstract: This research is performed on the causes of failure of flexible pavement a case study of Awka-ugwuoba section of the old Enugu-Onitsha expressway in Anambra State of Nigeria. One of the major problems facing Nigeria is pavement failure. It is our concern to carry out an investigation on the causes of failure of flexible pavement, a case study of Awka-Ugwuoba section of Old Enugu-Onitsha Highways. The investigation showed that the pavement failed both structurally and functionally, and the flexible pavement failed due to lack of pavement design, poor soil material at the sub grade, inadequate drainage facility, lack of effective routine maintenance by the concerned agencies and excessive water in the sub grade. From the study that has been carried out, several conclusions could be derived, and also it was made in virtue of the aims and objective of this study. The assessment of the flexible pavements in Awka-Ugwuoba section of the Old Enugu-Onitsha Highways reveals that there is a high degree of distress on the pavement, some of the predominant defects are, edge cracks, fatigue cracks, potholes, patches, rutting and longitudinal cracks. These defects occurred as a result of inadequate drainage, lack of design, poor soil material at some section of the layers, and high water content of the sub-grade. After careful investigation on the failed pavement in Awka-Ugwuoba section of the Old Enugu-Onitsha Highways, and the laboratory soil test, it will be appropriate to conclude that the failure of the pavement is as a result of inadequate drainage facility, lack of pavement design, excessive water content in the sub-grade which lead to sub-grade failure, poor soil material at the sub-grade, and lack of effective routine maintenance by the concerned agencies. Roads which have deteriorated beyond rehabilitation should be completely redesigned and reconstructed to standard. Subsequent drains in Old Enugu-Onitsha Highways should be constructed with reinforced concrete. Agencies concerned with the maintenance of this flexible pavements, should adopt an effective routine maintenance schedule for safe and comfortable operation of such pavements. Standard of construction and design should be improved. More academic research should be carried out on the engineering geo-techniques of Old Enugu-Onitsha highways.
